What is Science? Scientists are clever people who wear white cloaks and work in laboratories. To understand what is science, a very good place to start is with a Greek man called Aristotle who lived over years ago. Aristotle was arguably the first scientist, and he loved to make lists of all the different things he could think of.
One time he went to an island called Lesbos and he talked to the fishermen there, and looked in their nets to see what they had caught.
Then he made lists of all the different things they had caught depending on whether they were similar or not. Example: Aristotle might have wondered why all the animals in one pile had shells. He might have guessed that the animals had shells because they needed to be heavy to sink to the bottom.
Prediction This is where you think about your guess, and then predict what you should find if you go to another place and look at the same type of thing. Example: Aristotle might have predicted that if he went in the boat around the other side of the island, and looked at the sea bottom, then all the animals on the bottom would have shells.
